Motorcycle Diaries(2004)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318462/

If you watch this movie with an open, unbiased heart you will surely feel the way Guevara did-to be useful in some way...to help and move close to humanity.

The dialogues in this film are poetic and touch you. This is not a tale of heroic feats..its about two lives(Guevara and Alberto) running parallel for a while with common aspirations and similar dreams..What they had in common was restlessness and impassioned spirits that yearned to leave "civilization" behind and move closer to LAND. They wished to bid adieu (even if for a while) to the wretched life, uninspiring lectures, papers and med xms(Guevara was training to be a doc)..

Guevara was a normal youth..who wished just to be laid in every country of Latin America..He had a beautiful and doting GF...but something drew him away from her with his heart swinging like a pendulum between her and the streets...Nevertheless as their journey progressed..and they finally crossed the border of Argentina into a foreign land, his feelings split into two...a melancholy for the whats left behind and excitement for the unfamiliar to come....The youthful lustful heart finally gave away to the humane self...The tragic and haunting faces of the downtrodden all over Latin America agonized him..Human race seemed strange to him. The Incas knew astronomy, brain surgery and maths...the Spanish-gunpowder..the results we know..the story was the same even in Guevara's time and maybe even now...the common people knew arts, handicrafts..the niche ways of living..the rich and powerful-money and force..The poor have been made shelterless in their own land..The same story all over the world...

This captivating film about Guevara's transformation in course a journey across Latin America is a must watch for everybody. I am sure you will love it. The acting is too realistic. Watch the movie, if nothing moves you atleast the scenic beauty of the Latin American landscapes will....

Contact (1997) [English]

IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118884/

This is an awesome movie. In fact one of the best sci-fi based movies I hv seen. Nevertheless this movie underlines a realization that we are so insignificant in this universe that all our mortal passions and evils add up to nothing.

"The Universe is a vast; much larger than anything u can ever imagine ..and if we're all that's there, its an awful waste of space"

Similarly..your life span is vast; much larger than the moment you are imagining about it....and if u hvnt seen this movie, its an awful waste of time..

I havent read the book yet, but the movie itself stands out on its own. It throws a perspective that is comprehensible to evn the lame man w/o any scientific knowledge..the realization that we are nobody. We dont even know who we are? Why we are? How we are? Essentially as our so called intellect progresses we separate ourselves from others. We surf the web, watch movies...but that is just to bypass the loneliness and seclusion we have enshrouded ourselves in. In comparison to the vastness of the universe we are really lonely..the only relief we can find is in each other....Can there be a better message to spread the message of love for fellow beings.

The debate Science vs Religion is as old as the Greek olympics and maybe even older. The film I think is a satire on our perspective of this debate....As said by Father Joss at the end..both are just two sides of the same coin: they are both dedicated to the pursuit of truth. The film makes a mockery of our consumer profit making mentality...As soon as the scientists acknowledge receiving a signal, an insurance company comes up with a UFO abduction insurance adn lots of other commercial ideas....sounds funny but thats exactly what we do...try to cash in on a situation...then there are fanatics who oppose evry damn step mankind has taken.....coming up with a "GOD" explanation...Finally such a fanatic finally try to blow up such a step( I wont spoil the mpvie)...

The film is sarcastic in many ways: It shows that the powerful mop up the ideas of their juniors and make their name out of it.....The real scientist remains unknown while a manager or coordinator of ideas hogs the limelight...Its the same thing that happened to the manhattan project(atom bomb)..Oppenheimer hogged the limelight? what was his contribution...next to nothing....

The one question Ellie would have asked the "intelligent ET" was " How did they survive through the technological evolution without destroying themselves"...man that was profound..we have already been close to that situation twice....

Jodie foster does extremely well as crazy but determined scientist. The cinematography is good and the editing crisp....no dogmatism...

Well I can write pages about this movie but then u wouldnt read it. Infact dont waste any more time, watch the movie and stop all your shady materialistic ideas. You are not even a microbe in a remote African anthill when the size of the universe is taken into account.....

Apocalypse Now(1979) [English]

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078788/

This is one of those movies which blew me away from my feet. The deadly combination of Brando and Coppola did it again and Sheen perhaps put in the best performance of his life.

The film describes the philosophy of violence. In essence it turns out to be a satire shown in the backdrop of the Vietnam war.

A serious analyzer would see different angles to the movie like Sheen fell in to the trap of POWER even if for a split minute...

However even a casual moviegoer wouldbe overwhelmed by the movie..

Dreams( 1990) (Japanese)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100998/

This I presume is Kurosawa's best work after Rashomon. The film like Rashomon is a deep satire on human nature.

Dreams is a totally different approach to film making. Its like painting 7 different abstractions on the same canvas, each totallly different from the other but in essence delivering a message that requires profound understanding.

This is surely not a movie for everybody.

Au revoir, les enfants (1987) [French]

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092593/

This movie is in the Criterion Collection. So probably doesnt many words of praise. It is an outstanding movie about the 2nd world war seen through a different angle: through priests and children in a boarding school.

A serious movie though.

Airport(1970)-English

The details about the movie are available at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065377/

Seldom do I watch a movie rated 6.4 by IMDB (not that the ratings are always right). Recommended by a friend as a type of movie where you would remain glued to the seat for the whole duration(91 mins).

Well for someone like me who has seen as lot of movies, the movie was predictable. Yes , there was a suspense buildup but the end seemed clear. The film has lot of subplots which give a comic relief. I would rate any of the actors excellent in their acting. Nevertheless, the old stowaway was funny to watch and her expressions were flawless.

To keep the long story short, if you can spare 91 minutes watch this movie. But dont have much expectations. The movie is kind of lame.
